Default The Heist's 1st Ranger Build

The Heist's Anti-Caster build:

Squishy-Killer or Caster-Killer

R/whatever you want

Type:Can be used in PvE, PvP. PvP includes 4v4, GvG and 8v8, optimal in GvG and 8v8.

Skills
Punishing Shot [e]
Savage Shot
Hunter's Shot
Debilitating Shot
Read the Wind
Troll Unguent
Whirling Defense
Res Signet

Attributes
Marksmanship: 12+3
Expertise: 11+1+2
WS: 8+1

General Information and Tips:

Short bow is suggested, as the quicker firing rate may help with interrupts.

basically a general interrupt build. use Read the Wind to get your interrupts in as quickly as possible. use Debilitating shot whenever you can to lower your target's energy, but keep a watch on your own, since Punishing Shot, Debilitating Shot and Savage Shot all cost 4 energy. spamming these out as often as you can will leave you grasping for energy. a Zealous bowstring would be advisable...

Whirling Defense is to be used as soon as you come under concentrated attacks. back off and try to kite your targets around until they either lose intrest or target your teammate...or until you die. :P

Debilitating shot can be switched out with another skill, preferably another stance like Lightning Reflexes or Dodge.

Concerns:
Use Hunter's Shot as much as possible and other interrupts less; the pause after the shot leaves you quite vulnerable. for about 2 seconds you can't do JACK. not even move.

This build CAN NOT take concentrated fire. Troll Unguent is not enough to defend against any sort of attack, and therefore monk support is an absolute necessity. i'm working on keeping this build alive....but as of now i haven't found a good healing skill in the ranger primary or a good healing skill in any other possible secondary for that matter. any possible suggestions would be appreciated.

Credits
Credits go to....myself, i guess. i came up with this build after slogging through Grenth's Footprint and CA/TA/HoH/Guild Battles, finding out how fast i could interrupt, which skills were optimal for this kind of build.

i guess i could fit Chris_nin00 into here. he's a great ranger, and deserves to be honored....

and that's all.

Discuss! Please!

Debilitating by itself seems rather underpowered for its job, an afterhtought attack thrown in for the sake of saying "yeah, I can do that too". it can be superb when combined with other energy denial skills, and in fact that may want to be something you look into. Perhaps going /Me and bringing a few of the Mesmer's favorite toys could serve you well, as well as giving you access to Ether Feast, which is probably the best self-heal outside of the Monk line. It may still bite, but it bites a whole lot les than Troll Unguent. And if Troll goes, you have no need for Wilderness Survival in here and can thus pack those points into Mesmerness. A Debilitating Shot followed by an Energy Tap could really leave someone feeling dry. Not to mention keep your own Energy nice and stocked up.

Both been things monks remove quickly and/or easily though.

You could always swap Punishing Shot out for Echo. No need for extra interrupts when they have no energy to cast. Probably the most annoying E-denial skill outside of Mesmer.

As Laserlight said, Debilitating Shot seems really underpowered compared to its mesmer derivatives. I think the only thing that makes it what it is is its 'No Attribute' link since a mesmer needs 14+ Domination for a -10 energy. That been said though surely all E-surgers run with a -10 Surge/Burn/Weariness. All 3 causing much more havoc than DS.

Um... rangers should avoid damage... or at least that is what I attempt to do.

For PvP, typical R-Spike ranger looks bit like this

Punishing Shot {E} - quick recharge unconditional damage + an interrupt
Savage Shot - Good spike damage if interrupt
Dual Shot
Read the Winds
Favourable Winds
Troll Ungent
---whatever you want ---
Res

Definitely use a vampiric bow, use favourable winds, read the winds for + 15 damage, then punishing, savage, and dual shot. Dual shot is nice because the damage reduction is countered by the massive adding on of damage from +5 vamp bow +6 favourable winds and + 9 read the wind to BOTH ARROWS. So you'll gain +10 health too

ehm,
Why not using kindle arrows(and mayby+conjure) in stead of RTW in the spike?
It's far more dmg, I think the speed of the arrows doesnt matter that much.

Because you can focus on Marksmanship (16) and Expertise. (For +5 life with Troll Ungent you just need 4 points in Wilderness)

If you spread your attributs too thin (Wilderness for Kindle arrows and Fire Magic for Conjure flame) you end up making less damage then a pure Marksmanship build. Don´t forget: with max damage (15-28) and Marksmanship 16 your Bow does 17.23-32.16 damage plus the extra damage from FW & RtW.

Two more things: I find conjure & kindle combos very energy heavy.
You have a much better chance to hit moving targets with Marks 16.

cheers

One more thing, if you recall, that style of r-spike requires a vampiric bow. Last time I checked you can't get fiery or shocking vampiric bows, they are all physical. And also if in an r-spike team, another ranger should take winnowing to increase your physical damage even more.

For a better chance to hit moving targets use recurve bow + read the winds + favourable winds. This is the fastest possible arrow speed you can achieve. Dodge that

Amarth you're right:P
I checked it, at 4 WS kindle is +9 dmg, and at 16 Markmanship RTW is +10 dmg.

I'm R/N so Healing/Life Stealing replaces Troll Unguent for me.
I've racked up a lot of damage using similar builds to this, but I can't say I trust in Read the Wind as essential.
